MEDS1131 Masters Project 1

Course Description

This course will allow students the opportunity to develop competency in the design, conduct and reporting of an experimental project. This process will draw on those skills developed during the coursework courses in the program. Prior to commencement of this course students must have had their project proposal approved in MEDS1131 Project 1. Projects should be laboratory based, however where the student’s employment may require them to perform significant administrative or management functions, then a project in that area may be considered.

Students undertaking a project at their place of employment must have an approved laboratory based supervisor. The determination of appropriate workplace supervision will be part of the overall project proposal review. Students undertaking projects at their place of employment will be required to provide written authorisation from their workplace supervisor that they will be able to devote sufficient time to complete the project and that they will be able to access the resources of the laboratory to undertake their project.

Where required, projects must have prior Ethics Committee (Animal and/or Human) approval before experimental work is commenced.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Having studied this course it is intended that you should be able to:

1. Plan and design an experimental project to test a hypothesis.
2. Develop and utilise effective project management skills to complete the project according to the standards required and within the established timeframe.
3. Plan a project budget and identify and allocate appropriate resources.
4. Complete the practical phase of project, collect, analyse and interpret data.
5. Prepare a thesis in accordance with guidelines provided and in a form suitable for publication.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course will enable students to acquire skills in literature research and retrieval, design and management of a supervised research project and conduct of research following established and universally accepted investigative techniques. Students will, in addition, develop competency in scientific writing through the preparation of a thesis in a form suitable for submission for publication.

Overview of Assessment

A 15 minute oral presentation on the project should be presented to supervisor(s) and other students or employees by week 6 of this part-time program. This must be submitted in electronic form to the course coordinator. The final thesis should be submitted by the end of semester and will be assessed according to the RMIT Regulations for Masters by Courework as approved by Council on 10th February 1992 or as subsequently amended.

NN = Fail < 50%
PXP = Pass > 50%
