Course Description

In this capstone course you will build your own publishing company from the commissioning of commercially viable titles to the final balance sheet. You will simulate the publishing process by commissioning, marketing, promoting, and selling your list. You will also create the business framework around your publishing company, which includes your company’s profile, staffing requirements and finances.

This is the designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) course for GD073 Graduate Diploma in Editing and Publishing. This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry is integral to your experience.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically discuss the publishing process from commissioning to selling.
  2. Investigate the global and local publishing industry to develop new print and electronic book ideas.
  3. Critically analyse both ebooks and print formats, for different audiences and markets.
  4. Develop marketing and publicity strategies for books in both print and electronic formats and for a variety of audiences and markets.
  5. Implement the financial components of a book publishing enterprise, such as cash flow and company profit and loss.
  6. Reflect on and critically analyse the complexities of running a book publishing company in a local context within a global environment.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  1. Develop broad industry-based knowledge and skills for application across the local and global publishing industry.
  2. Critically analyse and identify the future directions – opportunities and challenges – for book publishing.
  3. Acquire and apply knowledge of local and international perspectives and issues about contemporary publishing practice.
  4. Employ appropriate technical skills and theoretical knowledge to solve problems associated with book publishing.
  5. Effectively and professionally communicate your ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  6. Work collaboratively to plan and produce communication projects appropriate to the publishing environment.
  7. Critically reflect on your own work to demonstrate autonomy, good judgement and ethical responsibility.
  8. Undertake research into contemporary media and communication theory and practice to explore possible industry and career directions.
