Course Description

This subject is a compulsory unit in the coursework part of the School of Social Science and Planning Honours program. It is designed to assist you in the thesis-writing process, to facilitate peer-group discussion of common problems and, through class presentations, to encourage you to engage in a process of continually analysing, ordering and presenting your thesis research data. The course does not offer a formal instructional program in research methodology, but you must have completed the first semester Honours Research Methods subject satisfactorily to enter the program.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the completion of this course you will be able to engage in sustained debate with other researchers at a similar stage of progress in the development of conceptual skills of thesis writing; articulate research problems, ideas and conclusions in verbal and written forms, and prepare and present research findings with fluency and in a manner that engages the attention of the audience.

Overview of Learning Activities

The workshop will include seminars and class-based presentations which will be critically assessed by participants in the class.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be supplied with a useful list of thesis-writing advice manuals. You should also refer to the materials in the manual you received in the Research Methods course undertaken in first semester.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment tasks in this course involve two short presentations in the class.
