Course Description
Extended Independent Study A is a 13,000 word, or equivalent, research project. Extended Independent Study A is the first semester of this research project. The candidate will work in close consultation with a supervisor to prepare and present a research project of approximately 13,000 words or equivalent over two semester part time or one semester full time. This may be an individual project or consist of a significant contribution to a group project. This course is the first stage of a 2 course project.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
The student will within a semester period work towards a finalised research paper of 13,000 words through:
1. Investigating and analyse relevant literature.
2. Obtain the necessary RMIT approvals to undertake a research project (HRESC and the relevant Program committee approval).
3. Conducting necessary fieldwork or data collection.
4. Present work in the required format for a research project.

Given that this course is designed to meet the needs of students from a range of contexts, resources will be detailed in Part B of the course guide at the time of course delivery. Students will be expected to access and read publications (journal articles, websites, book chapters etc) provided in the online site for the course.
Overview of Assessment
A formal written research paper of 13,000 words to be submitted at the end of the 2nd course for the independent study (Extended Independent Study B). Interim reporting will be coordinated by the student’s supervisor.
