Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

As this is a postgraduate course students must have a base degree of at least 3 years.
An approved DSC Portfolio course in research methodology/methods.

 


Course Description

The candidate will work in close consultation with the co-ordinator of this course to prepare and present a research project of approximately 19,500 words or equivalent. This is the first stage of a 3 stage minor thesis.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

For this course, students determine their own objectives. The thesis is essentially self-initiated and student-directed with tutorial support and individual consultations. A student is expected to design the research project and if necessary obtain research approval from the RMIT Human Research Ethics Committee (HRESC).


This course involves the presentation of a 19,500 word research report that will be prepared in three stages. This is the first stage. For part A the student will submit their proposal and review of the literature and arrange ethics clearance if necessary.

This course involves tutorials and consultation with the course co-ordinator.


Overview of Learning Resources

Students will build on the knowledge gained in the pre-requisite research methods course to design a self- initiated research project. This will entail extended reading on the selected topic and the preparation of a research proposal and a review of the literature. The student may need to negotiate ethics clearance as well. Regular tutorials will be offered and students are expected to arrange individual consultations with the course co-ordinator.


Overview of Assessment

A 19,500 word project to be submitted on the finalisation of the minor thesis (but not before the 3rd semester of the project.) For the first part of the minor thesis students will submit their proposal, a draft review of the literature and evidence that ethics approval ahs been arranged, if necessary.

Percentage of mark: A non-graded pass
