Course Description

BUSM 1724 is a one semester course which provides students with the opportunity to undertake an individual project. The project will be relevant to the student’s career interest. It combines a study of tourism practice with theories learnt in Tourism Research Methods to produce a research project


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course seeks to develop the following capabilities:

- the ability to understand and intergrate research methodologies and their appropriateness to particular issues faced by tourism organisations

- the ability to identify research questions relevant to the tourism industry

- the ability to understand the role that research plays in the on-going management of tourism

- the ability to critically evaluate research undertaken by others and determine its relevance and value

- the ability to present research findings in relevant and innovative ways to suit a particular audience


As a result of undertaking this course, a student should be better able to:

1. Design a research project encapsulating the conceptual and practical aspects of research

2. Refine research design to meet the objectives and purpose of the project

3. Develop research instruments appropriate to research design

4. Write up a formal research report


Overview of Learning Activities

Students will be required to undertake an individual project under the direction of the Course Co-ordinator. This should be a practical project that has an outcome that is relevant to the tourism agency concerned.
