BDesign Multimedia Systems specific Information: COSC1009 Design for Interactive Media 1 (DIM 1).
Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities:
It is assumed that you will have a basic level of computer skills (both Mac & PC) and basic Adobe Flash and intermediate software skills in Adobe Photoshop. Basic knowledge of concepts of visual theory including representation, metaphor, semiotics, and visual language is expected.
Course Description
This course develops on fundamental concepts for multimedia and visual literacy introduced in Design for Interactive Media 1; including visual and creative design, theories and history of visual language, introduction to interactive media and techniques. You will be introduced to basic design aesthetic and interactive authoring principles, composition, and media integration. Supervised workshops will involve critiquing all forms of visual media, practical digital and interactive design demonstrations, concept and skill development.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course it is expected that you will achieve the following: production, direction, composition, and documentation of multimedia based works; media integration techniques; concept, theories and methodologies of composition; group project work; authoring techniques – including interaction and navigation; intermediate skills in analysis of visual culture and theories of postmodernism.
The focus will be on creative solutions involving digital media authoring, development of visual language and image skills. You will be encouraged to challenge and develop your creative and critical ability through class exercises, individual and group projects.

Overview of Learning Activities
Lecturer inputs: A range of learning experiences are planned including lectures, tutorials, group solving exercises and discussion, studio workshops and computer lab demonstrations.
This course includes work integrated learning activities such as simulated Client briefs.
Learner Input: An active and constructive participation in group discussions and projects is expected in addition to completing weekly readings, group and individual exercises, and careful planning and completion of all assessment tasks. Learning activities will involve individual led seminar of discussion, analysis and criticism of weekly lecture topics and reading material.

You are encouraged to do a wide range of reading and independent library research into all areas of Art, design, and Multimedia.
If you are enrolled in BP153 Bachelor of Design – Multimedia Systems Program you may be required to obtain a copy of the Design for Interactive Media COSC1011 Course Reader, available from the Melbourne Co-Op bookshop in Semester 2. Please check with course Blackboard at start of semester for availability.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course will be divided into two key areas as students are assessed on individual assignments and a group project. The work over the semester is primarily based around the group project, however the individual assessment components are to be representative of the learning of the individual.

The individual and group project will be assessed on the following critieria:
- Interpretation of the brief
- Originality and innovation of concept, how well it addresses its aims
- Visual treatment and design
- Technical design & development and completion
- Overall Resolution
- Production values
The Individual and group project will require you to plan, conceive, design, and create graphic, interactive, or linear based work. The assignments are intended to give you an opportunity to explore an idea of your choice and develop critical and analytical skills. Assessment will be conducted during the semester.
