Course Description
This course examines the core concepts, principles of the legal and regulatory environment as it affects entrepreneurial businesses - and their application as to entrepreneurs’ rights and obligations in an increasingly complex and litigious environment.
Topics include:
• Approvals Required for Businesses; Ideas Protection (Business names, copyrights, designs, trademarks and patents)
• Competition and consumer law including trade practices law, fair trading and rights and competitive trading
• Choice of business organisations and entities covering ownership and control including sole traders, partnerships, companies, trusts and joint ventures
• Business transactions and operations (contracts, insurance, employment, taxation (income Tax, PAYG, FBT and superannuation)
• Regulatory issues when operating online or internationally
• Occupational Health and Safety
• Advertising Law and the Law of Marketing
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
On completing of The Regulatory Environment, students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of :
- The Australian legal and regulatory framework relating to the formation and running of a business
- Major options for business structures and their consequences
- Concepts and principles underpinning the regulation of business in Australia including as to consumers and competition
- Regulatory issues relating to the operational aspects of a business such as employment, OHS, insurance, taxation, superannuation, insurance and advertising
- Regulatory issues to consider in international business and e-business
Overview of Learning Activities
Students will explore theories and concepts associated with the defined learning outcomes and the practical application of these theories and concepts via learning modes such as formal lectures, guest lectures and tutorials involving case studies, class discussions and presentations.
