Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students should have a working knowledge and experience of either diagnostic and/or medical research laboratories that allow them to contextualize their learning to the professional practice of Laboratory Medicine.


Course Description

This course provides students with an overview of immune processes and mechanisms that extend to some of the most recent advances in experimental and clinical immunology. The cell biology component of the course focuses on mechanisms controlling and regulating cell interaction, the cell cycle and cell death.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The learning objectives of this course are described in detail in each of the three learning modules.
Module one covers:
Innate defence mechanisms;
B-cell development, humoral immunity and antibody synthesis, and
T-cell development, cell mediate immunity and biological response modifers enhancing immunity through vaccination

Module two covers:
tolerance and autoimmunity;
immune deficiency;
hypersensitivity, and
transplantation and tumour immunity

Module three covers:
factors controlling the cell cycle;
programmed cell death or apoptosis, and
cell signalling pathways
 



Overview of Learning Activities

The syllabus is covered in three independent learning modules, two devoted to immunology and one to cell biology. Each module contains an overview of the topics to be covered, learning outcomes to guide the student learning process, learning materials related to the topics, links to web-based learning resources and critical thinking questions. Students will also participate in ongoing discussion and communication using online discussion groups and e-mail.


Overview of Learning Resources

This course is conducted fully online and uses the RMIT Learning Hub.


Overview of Assessment

The assessment in this course will consist of three online tests (5%) and assignments (20%) based on each of the modules ie 25% per module. Students will also be required to maintain a learning journal that will contribute the remaining 25% of their marks. The learning journal is a compulsory component of assessment and must be submitted to obtain a grade in this course.
