Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
015051 Manufacturing Research Project 1– unless 015051 Project 1 and 015055 Project 2 are offered on the same semester–.
Course Description
This course is taken in the final semester of the program. The course constitutes the major project work activity for the program and involves the student in developing, managing and achieving the objectives of an engineering project. Students will work on projects individually or in small groups; however, each student will submit individual work. It is expected that MANU 2073 and MANU 2076 can be undertaken in an intensive mode in one semester provided the main aims of MANU 2073 are satisfied early in the semester.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This subject is designed to consolidate and expand the knowledge gained throughout the course through an in depth study of a highly technical application.
On completion, the student will have mastered the techniques of:
Applying appropriate analytical techniques to a substantial manufacturing problem.
Carrying out an appropriate information search and fundamental experimentation.
Implementing approved recommendation.
Compiling and presenting a comprehensive report.
At the completion of the course, students are expected to develop analytical and critical thinking skills.
Overview of Learning Activities
Allocated supervisor will guide students through the process of undertaking an engineering project. However, most of the work will be self-directed.
Overview of Learning Resources
These are dependant upon individual project area. Assistance will be provided by the project supervisors. Students are to meet with their supervisor at least fortnightly.
Overview of Assessment
The thesis will be of no more than 100 pages of double spaced 12 point font, including figures. This will be marked by the first supervisor and moderated if necessary by the Course Co-ordinator or other appointed academic staff.
For the thesis, half the marks will be allocated on how the work was communicated, including logical structure, use of English, referencing, presentation etc. The other half of the marks will be allocated for the technical, analytical, experimental, computational component.
(80% of the total mark)
The oral presentation and examination consists of a seminar followed by a rigorous question session. (20% of the total mark.)
