Students must have completed a 3 year undergraduate degree.


Students also need to have completed Service Development.

Course Description

Individual planning has been used extensively with people with disabilities for some time. Individual plans must be of high quality and have a positive contribution to the lives of people with disabilities. The elements of individual planning that will contribute to positive outcomes for people with disabilities are well established.

While individual planning has always been intended to be person centred, this focus has often been lost in implementation. Thus, the term person-centred planning is often used to bring the focus back to the individual. The cornerstone of person-centred planning is the recognition of the primacy of the individual where individual needs, preferences and visions drive the planning process.

This course provides extensive information in relation to the development and implementation of plans that are person-centred.  Topics in clude; assessment and information gathering, determining goals and objectives, the use of the tools available for person-centred planning and implementation issues, including person-centred practices.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the completion of the course the student will be able to;

1. Assess the needs, aspirations and preferences of the individual
2. Determine the goals and objectives for the meeting of service needs
3. Specify strategies which will result in the achieving of the goals and objectives contained in the plans
4. Evaluate of the effectiveness of individual plans
5. Use person-centred planning approaches

6. Understand the relationship between service planning and person-centred planning

Overview of Learning Activities

Seminar/workshops: Student directed discussion and analysis will be conducted. Students working in a team will solve a problem or acquire a skill or both. Students will gain intimate knowledge through the exploration of the subject material and practical applications.

Independent Reading: As part of the learning process and after being provided with frameworks through lectures, students will acquire a deeper and broader understanding of the subject material through independent reading. Students will synthesise material from a variety of sources and engage in a critical analysis of this material in class discussions. Students will be given readings specific to each particular lecture which will be discussed and considered in group discussions.

Case study material: Students will develop problem solving skills through the analysis of case studies which will require the application of theoretical and conceptual knowledge to hypothetical situations. Working in groups and individually, students will develop a behaviour support plan incorporating principles outlined in class and which relate specifically to the objectives for the subject.

Overview of Learning Resources

The students will be able to access course information and learning materials through the learning hub (also known as Online @ RMIT) and will be provided with reading lists or other sources of information. Students will also use the library resources and University computer facilities.

Analysis of research literature, case studies, practical exercises.
