Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

None, however successful completion of Chemistry Unit 1 would be a great advantage.

Course Description

In Chemistry Unit 2, students use their knowledge on the physical and chemical properties of water, the structure and bonding within and between water molecules to investigate solubility, concentration, pH and reactions in water including precipitation, acid-base and redox.

Students are also introduced to stoichiometry, analytical techniques and instrumental procedures analysis, and apply these to determine concentrations of different species in water samples including chemical contaminants.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Objective:

This course is designed to enable you to develop an understanding of the language and processes of chemistry as well as to conduct practical investigations to collect, interpret and analyse experimental data.

Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

(a)  investigate and inquire scientifically

(b) apply chemical understandings

(c) communicate chemical information and understandings

Area of Study 1: How do substances interact with water?

Upon successful completion of this area of study, you will be able to relate the properties of water to its structure and bonding, and explain the importance of the properties and reactions of water in selected contexts.

Area of study 2: How are substances in water measured and analysed?

Upon successful completion of this area of study, you will be able to measure amounts of dissolved substances in water and analyse water samples for salts, organic compounds and acids and bases.

Area of study 3: Research investigation

Upon successful completion of this area of study, you will be able to design and undertake a quantitative laboratory investigation related to water quality, and draw conclusions based on evidence from collected data.

Overview of Learning Activities

Class discussion, student presentation, answering questions, quizzes, practical activities, report writing, self revision, homework, topical tests, SACs and web based references.

Overview of Learning Resources

Resources available to assist your leaning:

(a) Prescribed text and Student Workbook  (refer to your book list provided by VCE office)

(b) Additional handouts and notes available on Blackboard

(c) Web resources:   www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/studies/chemistry/exams.html

(d)  Laboratory resources

(e)  Scientific calculator

In addition to that ,RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online system.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities. Assessment will include School Assessed Coursework Tasks (SACs) done under supervision in class time and Assignments to be done outside class time

You are required to achieve a Satisfactory (S) Pass for Units 2 with all Learning Outcomes completed ‘Satisfactorily’ and handed in by the due date plus the attendance requirement

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.  You should discuss the possibility of special Provision with the Year level coordinator

A student charter http://www.rmit.edu.au/about/studentcharter summarises your responsibilities as an RMIT student as well as those of your teachers.

Your course assessment conforms to RMIT assessment principles, regulations, policies, procedures and instructions which are available for review online:

http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=qwxbqbg739rl1

You should also consult the VCE Handbook 2016 for relevant contacts and further details.
