Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

There are no pre-requisite courses.  Students are assumed to have an undergraduate degree in sciences, engineering or business, or equivalent work experience, and should have the ability to undertake independent research and communicate effectively in writing.

Course Description

This course covers the science, technologies, protocols and information sources used in the development of small molecule and biological drugs from the research concept through product development and drug registration.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will develop skills in sourcing and filtering scientific, technological and regulatory information, critically evaluating its applicability to product development stages and writing cogent and focussed reports.

Students will understand the current science and technologies (in silico, in vitro and in vivo) and associated protocols applicable in drug development and have a critical appreciation of the risks, constraints and limitations inherent in the development process and product registration.

Overview of Learning Activities

Basic information and major issues will be presented in lectures and discussed in tutorial/workshops.  Students will conduct independent research using online resources to address specific industry case studies and will prepare written business reports.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will be referred to a variety of information sources including scientific literature, organisation web-sites, government publications, agency and company published information and news reports.
This course will be available on the Distributed Learning System (DLS) which will provide lecture notes, reference material, relevant web links and opportunity for peer input.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be by individual or group projects.  Project topics will be case study-based and relevant to current scientific and industrial issues in the course context.
