Course Description

Business Case Studies is a one semester course building on the introduction to systems thinking encountered in earlier courses and introducing how systems thinking can inform understanding of a variety of organisational purposes and forms. This course will assist you to appreciate the variety of professional roles within organisations and how different disciplines offer unique perspectives on organisational problems/issues. The learning will connect with business practice, providing an integration of theory and application in organisational settings. The course develops capabilities to prepare you for future learning, particularly reflective abilities, communicative capabilities and the ability to access and evaluate data from a variety of sources and of different types.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Your participation in the course will help you to develop a set of specific knowledge capabilities, including:
• Take effective action and/or initiate organisational action through the application of research and planning processes.
• Critically reflect on outcomes; that is, reflect and evaluate performance to identify the changes required to bridge the gap between anticipated and actual outcomes.
• Work effectively in small groups, manage and contribute to both process and task in a variety of group settings.
• Work effectively (that is, communicate with, question and discuss issues) with business professionals.


On completion of this course, you will be able to:
1. Describe the key dimensions of an organisation’s structure utilising appropriate terms and concepts.
2. Understand various influences on an organisation which result in its choice of structure and resultant management of human resources.
3. Analyse an organisation, identify performance problems and make decisions about structural and human resource changes necessary for solving the identified problems.
4. Have further developed skills in written communication, group interaction, objective setting and library use.


Overview of Learning Activities

To achieve the outcomes listed above, this course requires you to participate in the following learning activities:
• Reading and analysing case studies in a given context, then applying those abilities to a “live” situation.
• Interacting with an organisation to generate a “live” case.
• Workshopping case studies in groups by applying theories, additional research and discipline skills to generate credible solutions to issues raised through the live organisational research.
• Working as a group and reflecting on learning and group processes
