Course Description
This course aims to introduce students to a series of ideas relating to the impact of digital technology on our relationship to and our understanding of ‘the media’ in the broadest sense. We will look at the ways in which traditional media are changing under the impact of new technologies, and at the new cultural/media spaces that are forming in response to the introduction of digital media technologies.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
See below ’Learning Outcomes’
By the end of the course, students should have an overview of the developing impacts of digital technology on the major traditional media (radio, television, film and so on), and have an understanding of the new media /cultural spaces that are forming out of this new technology (especially in relation to the internet and world wide web). They should also be able to critically assess these impacts and changes, and to identify both real and potential points of convergence between different media forms facilitated by digital technology.
