Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
You should undertake ARCH1276 Professional Practice and Ethics in Planning at the same time as this course, or in the semester immediately following, as it contains areas of knowledge and skills which are implemented together in practice.
You should have successfully completed all core courses required in years one to three of the Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning or their equivalent before enrolling in both ARCH 1275 Planning Work Placement and ARCH 1276 Professional Practice and Ethics in Planning.
Alternatively, in exceptional circumstances, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course. Contact your course coordinator if you think you may be eligible.
Course Description
The course is a professional placement that enables you to experience work-integrated-learning in which your knowledge and skills are applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. It will also help you to critically evaluate professional practices and organisational demands, and reflect on your own professional skills, ideas and values.
In this course you will have the opportunity to undertake placement for at least 30 days in a planning agency or related workplace. Workplace opportunities include local or state government level (e.g. statutory or strategic), with a private planning consultancy, in the not-for-profit sector including research or in a simulated work environment.

Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Communicate ideas using diverse formats and strategies to academic and professional audiences within and external to the discipline of urban and regional planning;
- Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural and social sensitivity, environmental stewardship and ethical and reflective practice;
- Critically reflect on the interconnectedness of environmental, social, economic systems both locally and internationally and apply in your professional practice or further study;
- Initiate positive contributions to the wider community through professional planning practice, establishing empathy, equity and shared understanding across diverse interest groups.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Apply theoretical and practical skills relevant to working in the professional planning or related environment, including team work;
- Communicate in a professional manner with a range of stakeholders including colleagues and clients;
- Reflect on contemporary practice and trends in the planning and related industry to inform your future practice.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will undertake placement for a minimum of 30 days, potentially in a paid capacity, in a planning or related role, in the public, private or not-for profit sectors or in a simulated work environment. In this course, you will obtain your placement through a structured allocation process. If you have existing contacts within the field, you may be able to source a placement, pending approval from the Course Coordinator.
While you are expected to complete specific work tasks set by the workplace supervisor, the placement will also provide you with a guided professional learning environment. You and your workplace supervisor will negotiate a set of tasks that will enable you to develop and practice your planning skills. The Course Coordinator will liaise with your work placement supervisor, usually via telephone and/or email. Site visits may be conducted if these are requested, where geographically feasible.
Students cannot commence their WIL activity until they have received a confirmation email from the School, with a copy of their approved [WIL agreement/Student Undertaking]. Supervision arrangements must be outlined in the WIL Agreement/Student Undertaking.

Overview of Assessment
IMPORTANT
This course is marked on a pass / fail basis based on successful completion of placement with an organisation involving an urban and regional planning or related role. You will be assessed on how well you meet the Course Learning Outcomes and on your development against the Program Learning Outcomes.
This requires an approved workplace agreement to be fully completed prior to commencement of any placement and the submission of written confirmation from the workplace supervisor that the placement has been completed.
