Familiarity with the specialised terms and industry language as used in the Creative Industries is advisable.


Course Description

This business orientation course will equip you with a better understanding of common business principles and practices specific to the Creative Industries

It will encompass professional practice, preparation of diverse documentation, legal and moral obligations of the Creative Practitioner, understanding and formulating contracts, intellectual property, communication with clients, tendering, marketing, project management and responsibilities arising from working within a team.

This course will be delivered by an experienced industry practitioner and includes supporting material including many case studies relating to Creative Industry Practice.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course aims to empower / encourage you to:
 

  • Identify the spectrum of commercial elements within a creative business infrastructure.
  • Appreciate the diversity of influences that determine the success or failure of a creative business.
  • Respect the critical factors operating outside the production process which may influence the running of a creative business.
  • Realise and monitor the impact of trends such as government policy, market direction and social implications on a creative business.
  • Gain an awareness of the importance of company structure and the way in which different divisions of the company contribute to its advancement.
  • Understand the outcomes required from each division within a creative company and to devise methods for achieving those outcomes.
  • Recognise potential threats to different areas of the creative company structure and to determine how these threats may be avoided.
  • Understand the importance of effective communication and to devise purposeful communication strategies.
  • Devise strategies for reacting to market forces and external influences.
  • Understand the organisational dynamics existing within a creative company and how to use these them to best advantage.
  • Build a complete creative business infrastructure from start-up to operational company including the ability to secure capital.


This course provides a background of the fundamental business areas required for a new creative venture. The determining factors, more often than not, are outside the creative side of the business and also include external influences such as market direction, government policy and social implications. You will gain an awareness of all the influences that determine the likelihood of whether a new venture will succeed and be able to devise strategies that support business growth. On completion of this course you will have a thorough understanding of factors that affect the success of a creative project and be able to conduct an analysis of the commercial viability of an idea.

Ten key planning areas will be covered during seminars, lectures and workshops, which will include peer critique, and research.
