Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You should have a basic knowledge of Calculus up to the first year tertiary level. No prior knowledge of Statistics will be assumed; however, some basic knowledge of probability will be an asset.


Course Description

This course introduces you to geological statistics suitable for environmental engineers . It comprises of probability analysis and some basic statistical inferences.  The course also provides a comprehensive and appropriate background for those of you wishing to pursue a more advanced level course in Geostatistics. In addition, the course also aims to make you aware of the relevance and applicability of Statistics to your discipline.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of this course, you will

  • understand different data types and concepts of samples/population.
  • possess a set of basic statistical skills that will enable you to apply your knowledge to in discipline;
  • develop a better understanding of the basic theory underlying Statistics;
  • appreciate how Statistics can be used to solve problems arising out of research projects;
  • be able to communicate statistical ideas in a manner comprehensible to both experts and non-experts working in your area.


Through the combination of formal lectures and computer laboratories provided by this course, you will be able to appreciate the role that modern Statistics play in your discipline.  You  will also possess a basic statistical tool kit which will enable you to apply your  knowledge to research projects and other problems that could arise in your discipline.


Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts in data analysis, estimation and tests of statistical hypotheses will be explained in lectures and using online notes.  The computer laboratories will enable you  to perform statistical analyses on real data. Furthermore, the assignments will also test your understanding of the materials covered in lectures.

There is no prescribed text book for the course. Instead,  a set of comprehensive course notes will be distributed to you.  A list of  books covering various topics relevant to this course is listed below. The assignments and their solutions will also be put online for you to access.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment is mainly through assignments which test  your knowledge and  ability to apply what you have learnt to real data. There is also a final three - hour examination for the course. Assignments will be marked and returned to you promptly with detailed solutions provided for your perusal. While attendance is not compulsory, you will find that regular attendance is necessary in order to achieve the required standard to pass this course.
