PROC2044 Polymer Engineering 1
Course Description
This course builds on knowledge of fundamentals of polymer processing developed in previous years. It leads to specialization in polymer processing in practice, developments and research. This course considers specialist topics in polymer processing using chemical engineering knowledge of flow and material properties to predict the effects of processing parameters on properties and quality of product.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Undertake research into a new development in polymer materials and analyse what are the commercial benefits of the development
- Present a topic of interest in polymer material or process development and analyse what impact local production or importing would have on the benefits to Australian industry
- Undertake research into a new development in polymer processing and analyse what are the quality implications of the development
- Undertake research into a new development in polymer recycling and evaluate using sustainability principles what are the benefits of the development
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- Understand specialist topics in new polymer materials or processes
- Predict how changes to materials or process will affect the design of specialised polymer processing equipment and products
- Understand the relationship between quality and cost management using a systems approach
- Consider management of tensions in the supply chain between local and imported goods
- Understand how sustainability principles might apply to the polymer industry
Overview of Learning Activities
This course will contain lectures on specialist topics from a variety of researchers. Guest lecturers will also be invited to address particular relevant topics. It will also contain self-directed reading and research on topics of the student’s choice. Field visits will be included. This will lead to developing the knowledge and skills that are essential for chemical engineers working in the polymer industry. Assignments, presentations and reports will be used to test your understanding of the fundamentals and principles of polymer engineering.

There are no prescribed texts for this course. There are numerous text books available in the Library collections in Swanston St and Cardigan St. The internet provides a range of useful resources for assignments. Journal articles will be given to students.

There is no exam in this course. The assessment is based on reports and presentations and class work.
