Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course extends and complements the environmental section of PROC 2050 Chemical Engineering applications, PROC 2056 Environmental and Safety Management and PROC 2058 Environmental Engineering.

It should be noted that this course can be undertaken without having completed PROC 2058

Course Description

This course equips students with the knowledge and capabilities to design and operate processes with least impact on the environment.  It covers aspects of process and product design using the principles of life cycle assessment; the evaluation and optimisation of processes according to waste minimisation/cleaner production principles; introduction to and implementation of emerging technologies; and integration of skills to design and operate plants according to the "triple bottom line".

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

It is important that engineers working in the process industries incorporate sustainability in their thinking and practice. This course extends and complements your capabilities to enable selection and design of processes, evaluation and optimization of existing processes to have least impact on the environment. By integration of new and knowledge from preceding courses you will be able to design and operate plants according to the “triple bottom line”. You will also be able to apply emerging technologies to process design and in the implementation of cleaner production.

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • apply lifecycle assessment of varying levels of detail to the design and optimisation of processes and products
  • design a process according to cleaner production principles
  • evaluate and optimise existing processes for minimal impact on the environment
  • evaluate and discuss the applicability of a range of emerging process technologies
  • integrate knowledge and skills from various sources in the design and operation of processes according to the "triple bottom line".

Overview of Learning Activities

You will:

  • attend some formal lectures on specialist topics given by staff and external experts;
  • participate in class discussions;
  • make at least one presentation to the class;
  • undertake specialist reading on designated topics;
  • complete assignments.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be directed to a range of source materials in the various sessions.
