Course Description

This course helps you to develop skills in estimating capital and operating costs of process plants and evaluating project profitability. It will also cover issues related to the way in which individuals can work within organisations both as individuals and as members of teams. The aim is to prepare you better for the environment in which you will find yourself after graduation and open your mind to the issues which management face when trying to maximise productivity, profitability, employee satisfaction and loyalty. This course helps you to develop most of the graduate attributes with the intention of making you employable and keeping you employed.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will help you to develop your capabilities in evaluating project profitability and applying management principles to professional engineering practice.

After completing this course, you should be able to:
• analyse market potential for process industry products and forecast their demand and selling price
• estimate fixed and working capitals, and operating costs for process plants
• evaluate the profitability of process industry projects using measures such as ROI, NPV and DCFR 
• recognise that management competencies, and business and social responsibilities are essential components of engineering profession
• apply human, physical and financial resource management to professional engineering practice using case studies, problems and examples
• function effectively in multidisciplinary teams
• discuss the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context through an awareness of contemporary issues

This course will use lectures, interactive tutorials, and directed reading to develop your knowledge and skills in selected topics. Lectures will provide a guide to the scope of practical learning whereas tutorials will provide examples and guidance in calculation methods.

The details of prescribed text books will be made available in Part B of this course guide and in the Learning Hub. Overview of Assessment

Written assessments will be used in the evaluation of your learning in this course. The assignments and the final examination will assess your ability to evaluate process industry project profitability and apply basic principles of management to engineering practice.
