Three years of study at tertiary level in a LOTE, or a certificate of equivalence

Course Description

This is an elective course that focuses on introducing students to concepts and pedagogical approaches relevant to second language learning theories and practices. LOTE A and B courses are complementary to each other. This course provides the theoretical background for the practical orientation of LOTE Method B. Students will meet second language acquisition research and curriculum design techniques for constructing lessons appropriate to the learners’ needs. Current major teaching and learning issues second language learning will be reviewed.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course is designed to assist students to:
• Become familiar and engage with concepts and pedagogical approaches relevant to the teaching of second language learning.
• Build knowledge about current and basic theories and practices in LOTE teaching methodology.
• Develop skills for implementing a range of teaching materials for second language learning.
• Review materials for the teaching and learning of LOTE.
• Develop professional understandings of LOTE teaching and learning principles and practices.
 

Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
• Design curriculum materials to support learning and teaching of LOTE.
• Convey personal knowledge about selected areas LOTE.
• Discuss and be familiar with relevant Victorian, Australian and International research and frameworks related second language learning and teaching.
• Articulate an emerging LOTE teaching philosophy.

At the conclusion of this course students will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following ICT capabilities:
• Awareness of a range of contemporary ICT resources suitable to the classroom.
• Understandings of the role of ICT in learning and implications for the classroom.
• Abilities to provide opportunities for students to be engage in ICT-enriched activities that are essential self-regulating and cooperative.

Students’ learning in this course will involve a range of activities including but not limited to: lectures, workshops, groupwork, excursions, micro teaching, discussion, reading of academic texts and articles and curriculum design and materials incorporating Web based teaching and learning resources.
