Course Description
This course offers the opportunity for you to engage with local art practitioners, either through studio visits and/or sites of public works. Through a schedule of site visits, the idea and function of the artist’s studio and / or public art sites will be explored as a location of production, distribution, display, promotion and cultural engagement. The intention is to offer you a diverse experience of what contemporary art practice is like through site and location visits, galleries, museums and public art spaces. Through the process of discussion, lectures and critiques, some of the key issues for artists engaging in contemporary, local practice will be explored.
The aim of this course is designed to provide fine art students with an overview of the role of the artist in society. It examines the tangible and practical requirements commensurate with the role of the professional artist. With an emphasis on research, enquiry and awareness of the arts community, the course is designed to assist student artists to understand the current cultural community in which they are planning to contribute to.
This course is lecture based and will cover practical, theoretical and critical issues involved in a variety of contemporary professional practices. The course may include guest lectures where speakers will be invited to provide an insight into the role of the artist from a professional perspective and to integrate wider discussion and a broader sense of awareness of historical and social movements. The course will also present simple practical teaching lessons that aim to unify the groups understanding of practical issues, directly relating to exhibiting works in a public context.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program capabilities
- Find creative solutions to constraints and challenges in a fine art context
- Form, develop and implement a vision and philosophy of art as a profession, contributing to the positive development of culture in both local and international contexts.
- Effectively communicate via artistic production in a range of media and modes with awareness of and sensitivity to a range of local and global contexts and cultures
- Engage in autonomous and continued learning, apply new theories of practice and embrace new developments in cultural/artistic production
- Develop individual and collaborative modes of working and apply skills in teamwork, leadership and self management
- Invent, design and construct a pro-active and critically relevant career
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- The capacity for critical reflection and reflective arts practice, in order to continually develop, change and plan for a future that is both informed and improved by arts practice
- Development of a practical and intellectual basis for articulating formal, conceptual and aesthetic concerns as they relate to fine art practice
- Establish and implement a vision and philosophy of art as a profession
- Establish a viable means of communication by way of artistic concepts in in relation to both the local and global context
- Develop strategies for ongoing and continuous learning the context of art and culture
- Integrate collaborative working methods and apply relevant skills in teamwork, leadership and self management
- Develop a pro-active strategies for critical engagement in the cultural and creative industries
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities will include lectures, tutorials, site visits, presentations and reflective writing.
Detailed learning schedules and lesson plans for both the intensive week and regular weeks will be provided to students in advance of classes either electronically online or through student email and Canvas.

A selected range of supplies are available, as well as support from technical staff. You will also have access to a wide range of online and hardcopy resources through RMIT University Library.
RMIT University is in close proximity to a broad range of galleries and cultural venues which you will be expected to visit as part of your course. Professional studio specific workshops, labs and suppliers are also readily accessible.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. The assessment tasks are designed to encourage you to undertake independent research into relevant material. You will develop your skills in researching, analysing artists and their work, and presenting and writing up your findings.
