Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course Building Partnerships is the final course in the Applied Learning and Profession Practice (ALPP) courses in the degree. It is worth 12 credit points and runs concurrently with ALPP Investigative Project worth an additional 24 credit points. These courses form the final series of ALPP and Professional Practice experience in the degree.


Course Description

The focus of this course is to explore ways to establish and maintain effective relationships between teacher, student and parents/caregivers ie. Building Partnerships. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of effective communication around issues of assessment and reporting to the parent community and what it is that parents/caregivers want to know from the process.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The focus on capabilities for this course include:

  • professional knowledge, understandings and applications.


With respect to building partnerships with parents/caregivers, preservice teachers will be expected to:

1. Continually assess own strengths and possible improvement areas with respect to all objectives below.
2. Actively reflect and build upon their own experiences, knowledge, skills and attitudes, for example through action learning.
3. Create opportunities to communicate with a range of parents, and increase associated personal confidence and competence levels.
4. Become familiar with, discuss and evaluate recent relevant research and literature, including barriers and enablers to building successful partnerships with parents.
5. Engage in informed discussion and debate around current related trends and issues, including assessment and reporting of student performance.
6. Identify, design, conduct and evaluate a small action research project that aims to inform and address local needs.
7. Enhance their employability by linking 1-6 above with Professional Practice Competencies, for example within a portfolio that demonstrates teaching capability and professional learning.


Overview of Learning Activities

The course is delivered using an interactive and participatory learning model which focuses on workshop approaches. Diverse learning experiences may include active professional reading, investigations, engagement of electronic resources and completion of assessment.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will combine hurdle and assessed tasks. The assessment for this course will focus on developing opportunities for preservice teachers to engage in the work of teachers as they communicate and work with parents/ caregivers to enhance the learning experiences of children in schools.
