Course Description
The documentary is a genre whose importance has received increased recognition in the past decade. For educators, this genre can be particularly powerful as a way of engaging with the mutual construction of culture and self. This course covers both the historical and contemporary use of the form. It explores practical and theoretical aspects of the form and substance of the documentary. It allows you to investigate an issue which you feel strongly about. It examines documentary as an art form which can act as a vehicle for learning about the inherent symbols, genre, and language which each person regards as being uniquely their own, as well as deconstructing mainstream images and mores which may marginalise other identities/issues and in so doing alert the culture to its ‘blindnesses’. This course will encourage you to engage with their multi-faceted cultural heritage and your many selves as teachers through exploring art based forms and through the creation of your own documentaries. Through this exercise you will develop the practical and theoretical skills to work with your students in this genre.
