Course Description
Fashion Design Studio 5 – (Applied) is the core course within the fifth semester of the Bachelor of Design (Fashion) within the Applied Design Specialisation. The course develops the student’s research, analytical, evaluative and practical skills in relation to design development processes and outcomes as appropriate within the fashion industry. The student is taught to evaluate and develop creative solutions, presentations and prototypes for specific design projects relative to applied fashion and with reference to particular target markets. Emphasis is placed on exploratory 2D and 3D design and the development of original ideas and concepts that are viable within the fashion system.
The focus of the course is to align advanced creative skills with business aptitude and merchandising expertise to support original concepts and depth of research into proposed design opportunities for the fashion industry.
Fashion Design Studio 5 – (Applied) will require the application and extended development of design and fashion theory skills acquired in years one and two. This course will provide fundamental information that will be further developed in Design Studio courses in semesters 6 to 8.

The student will develop:
• an awareness of industry mechanisms and potential future opportunities
• relevant professional expertise in design presentation
• proficiency in 3D design processes and production skills
• an in depth understanding of the design process through analysis and application of research
• conceptual and appropriate strategies to design propositions
• analytical and research expertise applicable to design development and resolution
• an understanding of the broader context in which fashion ideas are situated
• a grasp of innovative fashion product opportunities that are commercially viable
Overview of Learning Activities
Fashion Design Studio 5 (Applied) will provide students with a diverse range of learning experiences. These experiences will combine self-directed research, analysis, reflection, peer interaction and discussion with staff-led presentations. Seminars and studio workshop sessions conducted by staff and industry practitioners provide the platform for information sharing, analysis and evaluation of concepts.
Students are expected to partake in extensive industry research and liaise with expert practitioners within the fashion system.
Students will be required to undertake thorough research into their area of interest using a diverse range of research methods. This information will then be critically evaluated

Technical reference books, trade publications and magazines will be recommended as required and as specified by lecturers for individual project areas.
