Course Description
Fashion Industry Practice is a core course in the third year of the Bachelor of Design (Fashion). This course enables students to extend their knowledge of career opportunities and professional practice within the fashion and related industries. It provides the essential background to students in the processes and possibilities within the fashion system. It addresses key issues that affect the industry and how students as future practitioners can prepare themselves for a viable and dynamic career in the world of fashion. Industry Practice prepares students for dealing with the mechanisms and dynamics of the fashion system and how they may communicate effectively within the industry
This course compliments the knowledge and skills acquired in design studio courses throughout the program and builds on acquired knowledge in fashion theory and business related courses.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
The course will provide students with the ability to:
• Gain experience in communicating effectively within the fashion industry
• Increase their knowledge and gain personal confidence through interaction with visiting professionals
• Achieve professional standards of presentation relevant to the fashion industry
• Extend their analytical and evaluative skills relative to industry requirements.
• Understand the dynamics and relationships within the fashion industry
• Develop appropriate techniques for presenting themselves and their folios to potential employees
• To be able to research, analyse and evaluate key issues that affect the context of the fashion industry
Overview of Learning Activities
This course aims to further skills in the areas of research, analysis, critical evaluation and industry awareness
Industry Practice will provide students with a diverse range of learning experiences. These experiences will combine self-directed research, analysis, reflection, peer interaction and discussion with staff-led presentations. Lectures, tutorials, studio workshops, class presentations and interactive class activities provide the platform for information sharing, analysis, application and evaluation of concepts.
Students will be required to undertake thorough research related to project briefs using a diverse range of research methods. This information will then be critically evaluated.
