Course Description
The Fashion Studies 3 course addresses the history and theory of fashion and is offered to you in the third year of the Bachelor of Design (Fashion) (Hons). This course builds upon your previous planned learning experiences in history, critical theory and cultural analysis related to design disciplines. Fashion Studies 3 provides the opportunity for you to research, analyse and consider the greater social and cultural issues that influence design. You are able to draw on specific information and knowledge gained in your studies and apply these to your own research. This course supports and complements your learning in Fashion Design Studios and Professional Practice courses. You will interface with peers and staff in lectures and tutorials to gain a varied and in depth understanding of research topics related to key concerns impacting on the futures of fashion design practices, consumption and production of ideas and products.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
• Apply advanced theoretical and technical knowledge across the fashion discipline.
• Reflect upon and assess the global context of the fashion system, so as to apply your advanced skills for life-long learning and enable you to confidently contribute to an industry that is always evolving.
• Engage in research within the broader context of design, conceptual frame- works, evaluation of relevant issues and with reference to the work of others in the field.
Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to:
1. Situate fashion within a nexus of culture, history, politics and economic change.
2. Develop an advancing ability to use theoretical and political perspectives to critically evaluate 20th and 21st Century fashion practices.
3. Communicate research outcomes to a professional and authoritative standard, both independently and in collaboration with others.
Overview of Learning Activities
This course aims to further your skills in the areas of research, cultural analysis, critical evaluation and design theory. Fashion Studies 3 will provide you with a diverse range of learning experiences. These experiences will combine self-directed research, analysis, reflection, peer interaction and discussion with staff-led presentations. Lectures, tutorials and interactive class activities provide the platform for information sharing, analysis, application and evaluation of concepts. You will be required to undertake thorough research into your area of interest using a diverse range of research methods.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessments will include:
- Scholarly reading and interpretation, 30%, CLO 2&3
- Lecture quizzes, 20%, CLO 2&3
- Essay Plan 0% CLO 2&3
- 3,000 word essay, 50%, CLO 1,2&3
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
