Course Description

This course will explore the history of Cinema concentrating on the key film milestones that have contributed to the world body of cinema. It will provide you with an overview of key periods in film history as well as key directors who have made a unique contribution to film-making

In the course you will explore major historical and political implications for film as well as a range of different genres from Hollywood to Europe. You will also investigate introductions to cinema language and criticism of the qualities of the films.

In completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Identify a range of film genres and their key characteristics.
  • Analyze the contributions made by key directors to the development of cinema.
  • Discuss and analyze films in relation to their historical and political implications.
  • Compare and contrast films in terms of their film language.
  • Determine the impact of past films on present day cinema.

There are several ways in which you will learn in this course:

  • Films screened and viewed as a group or individually.
  • Tutorials led by you, centred on the film watched that week.
  • Group discussions centred on the week’s screenings
  • Oral presentations on themes relating to the films screened.

  • Peer-led critique and reflection 30%
  • Oral presentation 30%
  • Written essay comparing two films screened 40%
