Course Description

Provides a foundation within the traditional fine art disciplines that facilitates and sustains the conceptual generation of practice through linking traditional technologies with new media. It offers students the opportunity to develop within their discipline in both the studio and the computer laboratory within a student-centered framework. The course establishes a skill base for dealing with conceptual, perceptual, aesthetic and technical issues in the fine arts both within and beyond the discipline.
This class will generate work that takes place in both the studio and the computer lab. The intention is to establish a synthesis between direct physical engagement and the creation of imagery through electronic media.

Work Integrated Learning is incorporated within the Course by a regular program of group and individual critiques in conjunction with the viewing of public exhibitions and regular exposure and involvement with international arts practitioners through Metasenta, projects within The Drawing Space and the international Artist in Residence Program.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the completion of the course, students will have established an understanding of the relationship between conventional and contemporary methodologies within drawing.

Students will develop a practical and intellectual foundation for addressing conceptual, perceptual and formal aesthetic problems in the field of drawing, while forming a defined strategy for addressing visual and graphic concerns in relation to new media.

    Overview of Learning Activities

Students are required to participate in regular classes that will take place in both the studio and computer lab. Individual and group tutorials will be scheduled to review progress and to develop the capacity for aesthetic judgment and informed self-analysis. Students are expected to cultivate an awareness of traditional and contemporary practices through research and regular visits to public and private galleries, guest lectures, workshops, scheduled excursions and use of library facilities.

    Overview of Learning Resources

Arrangements can be made to repeat, extend, or expand on information regarding the access and use of resource material in the RMIT Central Library. Students will have access to the Fine Art computer laboratory, digital cameras and video cameras

    Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be conducted by a panel of Drawing staff that includes the lecturer of the Course and the Course Coordinator of the Drawing Studio. Regular attendance is required.
