Course Description

This course investigates the methodological development of ideas and processes for contemporary sculpture. It explores how artists materialize ideas through workshop processes, conceptual analysis, material research, drawing and sketchbooks, collaboration and play. The semester’s study focuses upon the realisation of personal projects that are supported by idea mapping and proposal development. The emphasis is on the development of advanced artistic approaches that support the development of critical thinking for sculptors.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Gain analytical and critical capacities in creative and material research. Acquire methodological skills to track the development of art works. Explore personal artistic vision. Develop writing skills to describe and theorize projects. Utilize historical and theoretical knowledge of how artists use one artistic process to inform another and learn how to utilize this in artwork.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course consists of a number of linked projects based around studio practice. These are augmented by workshops, other exercises, exhibition visits and excursions that examine a range of technical processes and media pertinent to the analysis of design, space and process. Each class will involve the discussion of student’s work in progress.

Overview of Learning Resources

In addition to the supplied reference bibliography and specific class reading material, students resource individual tutorials, group tutorials / feedback sessions and visual presentations where appropriate. Students will require familiarity with Blackboard, the RMIT on-line learning application and RMIT library research facilities.

Overview of Assessment

Learning will be demonstrated in this course by ongoing participation in group feedback sessions, student self-feedback and through folio and related material submissions. Assessment of all folio work is by a panel including the lecturer and studio coordinator.
