Students need to be involved in a concurrent mentoring/ tutoring partnership.


Course Description

This course is designed to support and develop students involved in mentoring relationships within RMIT or in the wider community. Mentoring relationships include, but are not limited to peer tutoring and mentoring of RMIT undergraduate students within programs, mentoring of international students through the MATE (Mentors Assisting the Transition Experience) program, and tutoring in a primary or secondary school through the College of Science, Engineering and Health outreach programs.

Students are required to attend seminars introducing mentoring/ tutoring and the course, examining the application of theory to real-life experience and debriefing, reflecting, and evaluating.

Themes covered in the seminars may include communication, managing conflict, motivation and responsibility, the first year experience, working cross culturally, and learning styles.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the completion of this course students will be expected to be able to :

  • Define mentoring/ tutoring and provide examples of its uses in a range of contexts.
  • Identify the developmental stages in mentoring/ tutoring relationships.
  • Evaluate the benefits and limitations of the mentoring/ tutoring relationship for mentors and mentees.
  • Describe the core characteristics necessary for effective mentoring/ tutoring.
  • Outline the barriers and obstacles to effective mentoring/ tutoring.
  • Demonstrate reflective practise by documenting their mentoring/ tutoring journey.





Overview of Learning Activities

The course relies on students’ engagement in mentoring/tutoring activities. Seminars will provide an opportunity to consolidate knowledge derived from key resources, share mentoring experiences and develop professional communication and presentation skills.

Assessment activities provide students with the chance to reflect on their mentoring experiences in constructive ways, develop theoretical conceptualisations that underpin mentoring and enhance applied skills.
