Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course will build upon capabilities developed in HWSS2089 and HWSS2101 Professional Practices in Disability 2A & 2B.
The course also draws upon elements taught in HWSS2106 Disability Case Management

Course Description

This course is designed to equip you with an understanding and knowledge of practitioners working in the disability field. You will be presented with an overview of the service sector, with presentations from a variety of service providers including Disability Professionals Victoria, State Trustees and The Office of the Public Advocate. To support your development you will engage in case study exercises that require you to make appropriate recommendations regarding services to consumers and other professionals. The course will enable you to gain an understanding of how issues faced by people with disabilities, families, caregivers and other service providers may impact on the types and way services are delivered. Importantly, the course will allow you to reflect on service delivery practices and expose you to the importance of and need to undertake research to provide consumers with the best available options.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The objective of this course is to develop knowledge of services and skills required to support staff, families and individuals with a variety of needs across different environments.


At the completion of this course, if you have attended and actively participated in lectures, professional seminars, case studies and independent research you will have developed the knowledge and skills to be able to:

  • Participate in high level problem solving
  • Understand the roles of various service provides
  • Effectively communicate with a range of stakeholders
  • Build individual and community capacity through partnerships, networks and actions
  • Recognise causal links in arguments, identify main points in a discussion, and evaluate key points and supporting evidence


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will include lectures, professional seminars, case studies and online discussions. You are expected to fully participate in the course; taking your own notes, participating in case studies and reflecting on content through class and online resources. The intention is to assist you in becoming aware of the context for your professional practice and assist in your development as an emerging practitioner.

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials through myRMIT Studies.

All students are expected to use library and reputable electronic resources to aid their learning.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment will occur throughout the semester and students will be provided with feedback on their progress in lectures. Students that wish to receive more individualised feedback are to independently seek this from the course co-ordinator.

Assessment tasks include:

  • Case study (worth 30% of total mark;)
  • Research into Practice (worth 30% of total mark)
  • Resource folder (worth 40% of total mark)
