Course Description

This course offers critical and comparative analysis of mass media (particularly news media) systems in Asia.

The course will focus on:
- the historical development of Asian media philosophies and systems;
- the structure and function of media systems in various Asian societies;
- the media’s roles in Asian politics and socio-economic transformation;
- patterns of media ownership and control in the Asian region,;
- journalistic practices in Asia; and
- Asia’s accommodation of, and resistance to, the globalisation of Western communication ideas.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course, you will:
- be familiar with various theories of media systems (both normative media theories and transitional media approaches);
- have Increased/updated your knowledge about Asian media systems, media theories, and practices;
- be able to critically examine Asian media systems and practices by applying theories and knowledge leant; 
- have developed a comparative understanding of West-East media systems and media systems in various Asian societies; and 
- have developed research interests and expertise in Asian communication.



Overview of Learning Activities

The course consists of:
- lectures that will introduce key concepts and theories and analyse important issues regarding media system studies in general and Asian media systems in particular; and
- seminars that will provide an opportunity for students to discuss lecture topics, readings, and relevant video programs through group research, presentation and interaction.

You will be assessed through a combination of:
- class discussion;
- reading logs:
- group research/presentation; and
- a final essay.
