Course Description

This course will introduce students to key theories and theorists in studies of nationalism, transnationalism and globalism through the close reading of key texts in the field. The course will specifically explore the changing understandings of personal and collective identities, the structures of production and exchange, enquiry, communication and organisation under the uneven conditions of globalization. The course will address such questions as the status of the nation state and national identities in the current era of globalization, the role of transnational institutions, transnational corporate and local regimes of production, and the variety and unevenness of consumption patterns. The course aims to give students an applied knowledge of these problems informed by a broader social theoretical understanding.
