Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
036733 Clinical Medicine 1
Course Description
This course develops understanding of the standard medical approach to diagnosis of conditions that commonly present to primary-contact health care practitioners. In addition indicators of conditions that require referral are covered. This course also provides support for the student’s developing patient care responsibilities in the student teaching clinics.
The Course consists of six modules:
• Cardiovascular
• Haematology & Endocrinology
• Dermatology
• Respiratory & Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat (EENT)
• Gastro-intestinal & Genitourinary
• Diagnostic Imaging Interpretation
Capability Level 3: This level requires the application and integration of previous levels with the concurrent courseware into expanded clinical problems.
Dermatology
The aim of this module is to provide osteopathic students with the necessary clinical knowledge to competently assess and make clinical decisions in relation to the health care of patients, presenting with the manifestations of dermatological disease. Students will be able to evaluate diagnostic data to determine indications and contraindications to osteopathic care and the need to refer when necessary.
Cardiovascular
The aim of this module is to provide osteopathic students with the necessary clinical knowledge to competently assess and make clinical decisions in relation to the health care of patients, presenting with the manifestations of cardiovascular disease. Students will be able to evaluate diagnostic data to determine indications and contraindications to osteopathic care and the need to refer when necessary.
Respiratory & EENT
The aim of this module is to provide osteopathic students with the necessary clinical knowledge to competently assess and make clinical decisions in relation to the health care of patients, presenting with the manifestations of upper and/or lower respiratory tract disease. Students will be able to evaluate diagnostic data to determine indications and contraindications to osteopathic care and the need to refer when necessary.
Gastro-intestinal & Genitourinary
The aim of this module is to provide osteopathic students with the necessary clinical knowledge to competently assess and make clinical decisions in relation to the health care of patients, presenting with the manifestations of gastro-intestinal and/or genitourinary tract disease. Students will be able to evaluate diagnostic data to determine indications and contraindications to osteopathic care and the need to refer when necessary.
Haematology & Endocrinology
The aim of this module is to provide osteopathic students with the necessary clinical knowledge to competently assess and make clinical decisions in relation to the health care of patients, presenting with the manifestations of haematological and endocrine disease. Students will be able to evaluate diagnostic data to determine indications and contraindications to osteopathic care and the need to refer when necessary.
Diagnostic Imaging Interpretation
The approaches to interpretation of plain radiographs of the chest and abdomen are introduced in order to distinguish between disorders that may affect the chest / abdomen based on their radiographic features; and to know the clinical indications for taking or requesting chest or abdomen radiographs.
The imaging modalities other than plain film will be introduced and their advantages and disadvantages will be discussed, together with an overview of the circumstances under which their use may be indicated. The advanced imaging modalities include ultrasound, tomography, computerised tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine (bone scans).
