Course Description

This course focuses on Organisational Theory to understand how knowledge is acquired, retained and transmitted by organisations. You will learn to apply to organisational contexts and understand how analytical perspectives constrain what organisations view as valid forms of knowledge. You will explore how analytical perspectives provide various insights into the structure, culture and power relations within organisations. You will learn how organisations retain or lose certain segments of knowledge by examining the distinguishing features of the different analytical perspectives.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Apply learnings of multiple perspectives of Organisational Theory to understand how knowledge is acquired, retained and transmitted by organisations.
  2. Interpret and apply contemporary Organisational Theory perspectives to discover limitations of contemporary narratives and models for organisational design.
  3. Draw on different analytical perspectives as the basis for a multidisciplinary approach towards structure, technology, culture, environment and power relations for problem solving within organisations.
  4. Approach organisational design processes open mindedly with alternative systems of thought, assessing knowledge assumptions, recognising implications and practical consequences.
  5. Contribute to knowledge management by determining how organisations retain or lose segments of knowledge by examining the distinguishing features of the different analytical perspectives

  • researching topics linked to assessment tasks
  • analysis of short video or print case studies
  • RMIT Library-linked wider readings
