Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
CIVE1191 Excavation Engineering 1
Course Description
The course introduces and applies knowledge and skills of civil engineering to problems of a mineral resource development and/or construction engineering project. The emphasis is on the design and control of the surface and/or underground excavations of the project. The range of methods of designing, forming and supporting excavations at the site are investigated.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
The following capabilities will be developed to a level of awareness of the issues and ability to apply principles appropriately to a case study scenario.
1. Apply excavation stability analysis principles and methods
2. Select appropriate excavation methods for various engineering and mining projects
3. Explain and apply the design criteria for ground support systems
The capabilities developed in this course are further developed from Excavation Engineering 1 and are closely linked to Geological Engineering Practice 2. The course also outlines many of the engineering practices investigated in Risk Management Engineering and OH&S 2.
1. Test physical and mechanical soil and rock at a site
2. Analyse the stability of excavations in an engineering project
3. Investigate excavation methods and support systems for an engineering project
4. Interpret monitoring data for rock mass stability and/or ground subsidence
5. Model numerical stresses associated with excavations in an engineering project
Overview of Learning Activities
You will undertake self-paced learning tasks and complete regular assignments.
Overview of Learning Resources
Resources and their locations will be made available at the commencement of the course.
Overview of Assessment
You will compile a portfolio of work presenting the outcomes of learning tasks. The quality of the portfolio will be assessed according to professional practice standards emphasizing that the work is well organized, complete and concise.
