Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Prerequisite capabilities are those developed by completing BESC1014 Consumer behaviour and BESC1384 Introduction to Consumer Research, an equivalent course or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.

Course Description

This course aims to develop skills in carrying out consumer research and the application of this to the development and promotion of consumer products and services. Topic areas include the research process (linked to the concept of product life cycles), literature review, research design, data collection, coding and analysis, inferential and descriptive statistics, presentation of reports, ethical aspects and industry and government uses of research.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of the course a student should be able to:
• Appreciate the ethical issues associated with consumer research
• Apply customer related research methods
• Interpret the results of a consumer research study
• Evaluate the implications of a consumer research study for consumers, industry and government
• To assimilate, comprehend and integrate knowledge for building and maintaining an overview of global developments in the field, resulting in more effective problem analysis and solving
• To apply the research process effectively and ethically to resolve problems
• To supply scientific principles and methods to diagnose and solve problems from simple and discrete to complex and ill-defined
• To communicate in a range of forms (written, electronic, graphic, oral) that accommodate the setting and the audience
• To display personal and professional awareness associated with the ability to recognise and deal effectively with commercial, environmental and social /cultural forces on professional practice resulting in an improvement of health outcomes and quality of life for individuals and community groups
• To be self motivated and personally responsible and also to work effectively in a team environment, with the overall intention of being able to prescribe and implement effective multidisciplinary professional responses for alleviating consumer problems

Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are attendance at lectures, completion of tutorial questions and laboratory projects, completion of written assignments and private study.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will be provided with lists of relevant texts, library resources (Including appropriate journals) and freely accessible Internet sites. Other material will be provided in class.
Students will be able to access course information and learning material through the Learning Hub (also known as online@RMIT).

Overview of Assessment

Performance on this course will first be assessed by students undertaking a Research Methods assignment in pairs, with the results being presented to the class.  This is followed by  a multiple choice test in class.  Finally, an end of semester examination tests a student’s comprehension of the concepts and material presented in class.
