This course is for Fine Art Students from BP201 only. Successful completion of Year 2 Painting or equivalent.


Course Description

This course focuses on individual development and expression at an advanced level of expertise.  Formal and conceptual concerns are identified through studio investigation in the form of individual project development.  Students participate in individual and group tutorials which specifically conextualise their work in relationship to contemporary art practice relevant to the course. Students develop an individual work proposal in consultation with academic staff.  Studio work is complemented by lectures, films, seminars, gallery visits and professional practice. This course is a Work Integrated Learning course (WIL).  The key feature of WIL courses is that learning experiences simulate the working life of professional practitioners.  As such this course introduces you to a research based approach to painting and its related practices by working as a practicing artist in a studio based learning context.

Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

  • find creative solutions to constraints and challenges in a fine art context
  • effectively communicate via artistic production in a range of media and modes with awareness of and sensitivity to a range of local and global contexts and cultures
  • develop a critically reflective arts practice, in order to continually develop, change and plan for a future that is both informed and improved by arts practice
  • engage in autonomous and continued learning, apply new theories of practice and embrace new developments in cultural/artistic production
  • invent, design and construct a pro-active and critically relevant career as a member of the cultural and creative industries






Learning outcomes

At the successful conclusion of this course you will have:

  • A practical and intellectual basis for articulating formal, conceptual and aesthetic concerns as they relate to fine art practice at year 3 level.
  • Engaged in research based work practices that lead to a personal direction within a contemporary Fine Art context.
  • Achieved competence in a selected area of painting fine art practice to an appropriate professional level.
  • Developed analytical and critical research skills applicable to your own work and working process and the work of others in relation to professional artistic standards.
  • Gained an understanding of the nature and processes of self initiated learning and its application within professional practice.
  • Gained an ability to demonstrate skills to analyse and be verbally articulate in critique sessions and group tutorials.
  • Experienced the process of preparing resolved work for public exhibition and attendant publications.
  • Competence in identifying issues that relate to professional practice and health and safety in the art industry.



Overview of Learning Activities

The studio based approach to learning in this course will provide opportunities for you to work with industry professionals whilst engaging in problem solving painting experiences. You will receive feedback from your peers, practicing artists and others in the arts industry through a variety of consultations, tutorials, critiques and reviews. 

Focus will be on your individual responses to perceived core issues and methodologies that relate to contemporary art practice.

Students are encouraged to keep a Work Integrated Learning notebook/journal to record individual and group feedback during consultations with staff and in critiques, reviews and individual and group tutorials relating to aspects of their learning (this journal is not assessable)

 You will be advised of learning resources relevant to independent research by academic staff during the semester. 


Overview of Assessment

The work resulting from your studio practice will be presented for assessment at the end of semester in the form of a folio.  Your folio should clearly demonstrate the learning objectives of this course and my comprise drawings photographs, digital works, paintings, videos and journals which reflect your visual, conceptual and technical research. This folio will be assessed by teaching staff (industry professionals) and the studio coordinator and moderated by and external industry examiner.

The folio should reflect engagement in WIL (work integrated learning), critiques and tutorials, specifically in resolved work, research, documentation and individual development.
