VART 1994  VART1995 or industry experience equivalent.

Course Description

This course focuses  on students individual practice to develop a folio project of work that further extends their material and conceptual interests.
Students negotiate a workload with their lecturer and are given ongoing supervision and guidance for the development of their project.
Students participate in individual and group tutorials which specifically contextualise their work in relationship to contemporary art practice. Students are directed to appropriate resources and instructed in divergent methodologies sensitive to their needs.
Studio work is complemented by lectures, workshops, self directed gallery visits.
This course aims to give students strong and individual folio of work and facilitate student’s transition to self-supervised art practice.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

By the conclusion of this course it is anticipated that students will be able to:
develop a conceptual premise for visual and theoretical research
formulate and articulate a theoretical and technical framework for an art practice
develop analytical and critical research skills independently
design and write a visual research project
understand the possibilities offered by print media, and of its position within contemporary art practice
undertake the process of planning and executing an art project for public exhibition

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning will essentially be studio based with group tutorials and individual consultations with a lecturer.
Lectures will incorporate demonstrations, methods of production, health and safety, professional practice, self initiated learning through work proposals, gallery visits, individual visual and bibliographic research, audio visual presentations,
Students are encouraged to keep a Work Integrated Learning notebook/journal to record individual and group feedback during consultations with staff and in critiques, reviews and individual and group tutorials relating to aspects of their learning. 

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will have access to professional standard printmaking facilities, a selected range of supplies and equipment, and full time technical staff. RMIT is in close proximity to a broad range of Melbourne galleries and cultural venues, and professional printmaking workshops and suppliers are also readily accessible. All students have access to RMIT Library online and hardcopy resources, with the State Library being on RMIT’s doorstep.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is via folio submission, and is conducted by a panel and reviewed by a moderator.
Details will be available through the lecturer prior to the time of assessment.
A completed project is presented at the end of semester, including a detailed account of methodology with its conceptual and thematic underpinning.
Back up work should demonstrate both technical and conceptual experimentation, as well as engagement with contemporary art practice.
Supporting, written documentation should clearly articulate the student’s intent and rationale.
