Course Description

This as an advanced course for students who are familiar with book construction methods and who have an interest in artists’ books as a contemporary practice. The course is research and project based with an emphasis on the development, in consultation with staff, of personal approaches to making artist’s books. Students will receive introductory instruction in InDesign CS2 digital publishing, and develop and construct an artist’s catalogue and/or invitation to printing stage. Gallery/studio visits and guest speakers will also form part of the course. Interested students will have the option of participating in an extension class in traditional book binding.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The successful completion of this course will require students:
• To produce a personalized artist’s catalogue.
• To produce a resolved book/series of books that address the conceptual implications of the book format.
• To gain basic knowledge of InDesign digital publishing.
• To engage with the unique possibilities presented by the artist’s book for explorations of personal projects.

• Introduction to a selection of book forms and their utilization within the contemporary visual arts context.
• Regular workshop demonstration of advanced book binding techniques.
• Introductory tuition in InDesign CS2 digital publishing.
• Gallery/studio visits and/or guest speakers as directed.
• Regular individual tutorials with staff.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will have access to clean workshop facilities, and a selected range of supplies and equipment. RMIT is in close proximity to a broad range of Melbourne galleries and cultural venues, and professional bookbinding workshops and suppliers are also readily accessible. All students have access to RMIT Library online and hardcopy resources, with the State Library being on RMIT’s doorstep.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is via folio submission, and is conducted by the lecturer and reviewed by the Studio Coordinator. Details will be available through the lecturer prior to the time of assessment.
