Course Description

Industry Based Project is the Workplace component within the Professional Skills Program.

The Professional Skills Program (PSP) is a full-time full semester program that is an alternative to the cooperative year in industry. The program aims to facilitate the transition from university to the workplace through the development of the professional skills necessary in a business environment.

The program comprises a two day a week placement in industry, experience of running a company through a computer simulated game and extensive personal skills development eg. communication, team leadership, presentation, time management

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The program aims to not only recognise and build on the skills, capabilities and knowledge that students have acquired in their first two years of study but also to increase awareness of a wider social, cultural and global environment in which individuals live and work. Students will also increase their understanding of the contributions that disciplines other than their own provide in a broader business context.

At the conclusion of the course students should have:
- Applied knowledge and theory gained in studies to practical issues in a workplace.
- Applied analytical approaches to problem solving.
- Experienced, personally, integration into an actual professional work place.
- Learnt how to manage a small business project.
- Gained a better understanding of the general requirements of business writing
- Reflected individually and collectively on what happens in business including issues of business culture and etiquette.
- Communicated in a business/community organisation to achieve outcomes.
- Worked individually or as a member of a team.
- Undertaken a business presentation.
- Prepared a specific business report.

Overview of Learning Activities

Placement in Industry: students are placed in an actual workplace to deliver an industry project (usually) related to their major area of study (two days per week for 10 weeks of the semester). As the experience is seen to be more important than the actual nature of the project the student may (with their consent) be asked to perform a project outside their major area of study.

Workshops relevant to the placement in industry

Learning events include:

Orientation – MBTI & Teamwork activities
Business Planning
Business Etiquette
PSP Project planning
Business writing
Business communication in English (as applicable)
Presentation skills

Overview of Learning Resources

Distributed Learning System (DLS)

Extensive information about the course, assessment, timetable changes, announcements etc. will be placed on the DLS throughout the semester.
It is the student’s responsibility to check the DLS on a regular basis.
If there are problems accessing the DLS, contact the DLS online support service at http://support.online@rmit.edu.au

Overview of Assessment

The workplace project, based in industry requires students to produce a report on issues of relevance and importance to the host organisation. At the conclusion of the work placement students present their report to company representatives at a formal presentation.
