Course Description

The course will provide you with the knowledge of strategic retail planning principles that are designed to better position both small and medium fashion retail organisations operating in an increasingly competitive economic global market. Both short-term and long-term business strategies will be examined and evaluated to determine the appropriateness of these strategies to current and future fashion retail business enterprise needs. 

You will explore and analyse several case study examples within the fashion retail environment designed to expand your knowledge, understanding and application of key theory and strategic concepts whilst developing analytical and problem-solving skills that are required for middle to senior management roles within leading fashion retail organisations. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

a) Apply logical and critical thinking in resolving a range of management issues in a fashion and textiles context.

b) Identify, research, analyse and manage emerging global issues and trends in the fashion and textiles industry.

c) Conceptualise, integrate and organise information in order to resolve complex issues related to fashion and textiles product development.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1. Analyse and evaluate the framework of fashion retailing.

CLO2. Interpret and analyse strategic planning for fashion retailers.

CLO3. Assess the steps in the implementation of fashion merchandise plans including the merchandising forecasting and budgeting process.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will participate in a combination of classroom activities, including weekly online lectures, tutorials and case study discussions drawn from local and international contexts in recent times.  This will provide you with an understanding of the theoretical principles and concepts which form a part of the fashion retail competitive environment. At the end of this course you will be able to develop retail management strategies for fashion and textile enterprises.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment 1: Individual major assignment part 1 (35%)  
CLO: 1  

Assessment 2: Individual performance and reflective piece (25%) 
CLO’s: 1, 2 & 3  

Assessment 3: Individual major assignment parts 1&2 (40%)  
CLO’s: 2 & 3  

Assessment may include tests, case studies and assignments. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
