Course Description

This course develops critical thinking and problem solving skills in the synthesis and analysis of processes using mass and energy balances and control design. It builds on your knowledge of process plant design and process control courses from earlier years, where you designed single unit operations and control systems. This course provides you with the tools to synthesize a complete process and analyse the effects of design and operating conditions on control design in a system that reflects an industrial application. You will work in a group on a project.

On completion of the course you should also be able to:
- Evaluate alternative processes to produce a specified product and select the best process based on technical, environmental, economic and safety considerations
- Synthesise a process flowsheet for a given process
- Design major process equipment using chemical engineering principles
- Design control strategies for selected process equipment and analyse the effects of operating and design conditions on those control strategies
- Estimate capital and operating costs of the plant, and perform cash flow analysis
- Identify sustainability issues in a given process
- Demonstrate effective team membership
