Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course is core for BA (Digital Art) and is also available as an elective to BA (Photography) students.

Course Description

This course will enable you to develop a grounding in the theory and practice of professional portfolio development for a Games context. It will give you a thorough overview of the skills and knowledge you will need to enter the Games professional world, and the digital media workplace, as professionals.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course will focus on developing skills and understanding through hands-on experience including individual and collaborative assignments and class exercises. A central component will be your involvement in the organization, display, marketing and distribution of your graduating exhibition. This exhibition is your springboard into the professional world and your opportunity to present yourself professionally.

Throughout the course, you will build a solid foundation of ideas, methods and techniques as well as professional formats for presentation, which will have a deep and broad impact on the way you approach, work on and develop future multimedia projects.

Overview of Learning Activities

The course will consist of lectures, tutorials and assessments based around developing skills and understanding through hands-on experience including individual and collaborative assignments and class exercises. Key to the process will be feedback directed between students of both their work and their portfolios.

Overview of Learning Resources

The learning approach in this course will be student-centred and project-based. You will be expected to use lateral, analytical and critical thinking processes, both at an individual and group level, through exercises, critiques, reviews and discussions. The exploration of existing models, theories and paradigms will be essential, allowing you to develop your knowledge base of creative strategies.

This course will be offered as a series of weekly lectures and group discussions.

Following the weekly lecture, a group discussion will be held to discuss the weekly topic. You will be expected to prepare and contribute by activating discussion via formal presentations and by participating in discussion. To develop your selection and analytical skills, your use of video clips and other appropriate media will be actively encouraged.

The course includes work integrated learning, with an emphasis on gaining real-world experience and all students will be expected to undertake either organisational roles in preparing the graduation exhibition or volunteer work within an approved organization or production, negotiated with the lecturer.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment will be directed through preperation for the final year graduating exhibition and through personal portfolios.
