VART 2978  Studio Imaging Practice 101

Course Description

This course builds on the learning gained in Studio Imaging Practice 101.
The practice of illustrative photography will be learned through a balanced program addressing skills and creativity. This will be undertaken with digital tethered shooting using DSLR equipment in the studio environment and the interpretation and use of various lighting techniques.
All assignments cover a wide range of illustrative problems; however individual initiative and innovative thinking towards problem solving are expected. The course is directly aimed at producing graduates who are able to successfully integrate into the professional photographic industry.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of this course, it is expected that you will develop the capability to be a visually literate problem solver. You will develop skills to produce images based on conceptual initiative, high technical standard and professional lighting qualities. You should be a flexible thinker, have developed self-critical & analytical skills and have confidence in your ability to solve problems that arise during the creation/production process. It is also envisaged that you will develop physical and mental endurance and be highly self-motivated. You will learn to present your work in tutorials and communicate your ideas.

Apply lighting and camera techniques to resolve a variety of technical and creative problems associated with commercial studio photography

Create well designed and technically crafted images

Investigate and compare examples of historical and contemporary commercial images relevant to the specific visual solution

Present and explain concepts and solutions in response to defined briefs

Overview of Learning Activities

The course will be delivered through weekly 3-hour teacher guided sessions in the studio, including ‘on the floor’ feedback. The learning experiences will also be supported by student presentation critique sessions, when you will present your work and communicate your ideas.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.
Assessment may include projects, folio and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning.
