Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

The course assumes VCE Physics or equivalent as a prerequisite.

Course Description

Optics and wave phenomena have a very broad range of applications in the sciences, engineering, technology and the arts.
The course provides students with a first year introduction to the field of waves and optics. As well as being important in its own right, the knowledge gained will be applied in many other subject areas eg: Fields Waves & Light, Lasers & Holography, and Photonics & Nuclear Physics which are studied in later years of the program.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the end of the course the student should:
• be able to expound the physical concepts and theory introduced in each topic of the course;
• be able to communicate and explain these concepts to others;
• be able apply the theory they have learned to the solution of physical problems;
• be able to maintain a scientific journal and report on technical matters in a clear and concise way.

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning will occur through a series of lectures, tutorial discussions, written and on-line assignments and laboratory experiments designed to illustrate the course content and develop capabilities using a variety of experiences.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials through the Learning Hub (also known as online@RMIT) and will be provided with copies of additional materials in class. Lists of relevant reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided. Students will also use laboratory equipment and computer software within the School during project and assignment work.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment during semester is based on performance in class tests, online homework problems and maintainance of a laboratory journal. There will also be an end of semester exam.
