Completion of Engineering Design 3B is an essential prerequisite. You are expected to have completed all courses from the first 3 years of your undergraduate program.

Course Description

In fourth year Engineering Design, development of advanced technical design skills together with integrated business and personal skills, will be continued through substantial project work. You will undertake a major individual design project and will practice professional levels of documentation, customer liaison and reporting. The projects will demand high levels of technical competence and organisational skills and will provide practice in exercising enterprise skills. Projects may be industry based.

You will be required to liaise with your chosen academic supervisor on a weekly basis to promote successful completion of their project. Project progress will be regularly tracked and form part of the final assessment. You are expected to spend a minimum of twenty-two (22) self-directed hours per week on the design project during the semester. The course also consists of an one (1) hour lecture (first six weeks) and a weekly one (1) hour tutorial (weeks 2 - 7 only).

This 24 credit points version of Engineering Design 4 is intended only for students who need to complete Engineering Design 4 in one semester under special circumstances, e.g. you are only 48 credit points or less from graduation. Normally you must do fourth year engineering design in two semesters by enrolling in Engineering Design 4A and 4B.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The capabilities that you will learn, develop and exercise in this course are given below:

• Ability to apply techniques learned in other technical courses in the design and implementation of an engineering project.
• Ability to solve problems encountered in the project and make decisions using sound engineering methodologies.
• Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally and develop sound presentation skills.
• Ability to undertake self-directed study.
• Ability to identify and define sustainability problems and/or issues relating to the project.
• Ability to use appropriate project management techniques.

At the conclusion of your course you will be able to:
• Undertake a technical design project in a coherent and logical manner.
• Write a project thesis in a fluent and coherent style.
• Present a technical project in a fluent and compelling way.
• Demonstrate proficiency in your chosen project area .

Overview of Assessment

Major Project and other designated assessment tasks.

Professional Experience is an assessable component of EEET2266. It requires you to complete twelve (12) weeks of full time work, or an equivalent 432 hours of part time work that is related to your engineering studies, and supervised by an engineer with qualifications accredited by a national professional engineering body, e.g. Engineers Australia or equivalent. You must complete your Professional Experience before a passing mark is given for EEET2266.
