Course Description

This course provides a collaborative and directed learning environment that enables experimental and explorative outcomes relevant to the Multimedia mediums. It is also a guided environment where you access conceptual assistance and direction with projects being undertaken in other courses. The focus is on understanding the broad possibilities and potentials of the various mediums through practical experimentation and creation. It seeks to subvert the accepted norms of practice and encourage innovative creative outcomes by applying the skill sets established in the accompanying courses – combining the skill sets into a project(s) that seeks to exploit the possibilities that multiple media offer.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Learning Objectives

a.     Develop the capability of creative exploration and experimentation with the medium.

b.     Analyse and develop your personal creative processes.

c.     Discover and develop specific creative methods that you can use in your study and future practice.

d.     Provide you with the time and direction to produce creative outcomes by applying the skill sets you will be actively engaging in other courses.

e.     Continue critical and analytical processes as individuals and with peers.

f.     Understand the realities of working with projects that utilise multiple media in both conceptual and production environments.

g.     Explore the creative potentials and application of skills within your chosen stream.

Overview of Learning Activities

Within this course you will remain active through a number of different methods. You will continually engage in a collaborative studio like environment through assigned projects within the course – both collaborative and solo. These projects will be self contained and designed to allow experimentation and adoption of material learned and applied from other accompanying courses - the main objective being to establish creative experimentation and awareness of the potential of the medium. You will be exposed to examples and case studies of creative examples of experimentation and explorative processes.

You will be encouraged and guided in actively engaging in critical analysis both informally and formally between the supervising lecturer and within the group.

The studio environment will also provide and encourage you to self-plan and manage other course projects while seeking guidance and advice from supervising lecturers.

Overview of Learning Resources

Many of the resources you will be expected to use are computer-based or computer peripherals and these resources will be provided in the school’s computer laboratories.

You may need to use digital content acquisition tools such as cameras and sound recording equipment. These will be available for student-loan. You organize the loan of such equipment yourselves from the school’s equipment store.

You should make uses of wider university resources such as its libraries, print and audio-visual collections and, if appropriate, the University’s Learning Skills Unit.

Some course components may be presented in lecture theatres. You will be advised of the time and lecture theatre location of such presentations.
